VCE P.E Excursions

Deakin University

On the 20th of June 2018, the senior PE girls had the opportunity to visit Deakin University and participate in a variety of resistance training activities. We were tested on our personal power, strength and endurance abilities. We used Deakin’s high-tech facilities that ranged from bench presses, weightlifting and jumping pad to measure our repetition maximum (which measures the amount of weight that one can lift for a specific exercise). We used the jumping mat to explore our lower body power and used ‘gym ware’ to test our upper body power. With their specific equations and calculations the staff were able to calculate our individual repetition maximum calculating it to be proportional to our body weight. Towards the end of the lesson we discussed a series of case studies to determine specific training regimes for specific people. We specifically discussed a training program for a shot putter and a person in the general population wishing to have greater muscle power/mass.

Not only were we able to apply this towards our PE studies, but we can also use this for our future knowledge and benefit. We now know the Australian aging population and obesity rates are increasing and are now aware of the different types of activities required to lead a healthy future.

We thank the generous staff for giving us the opportunity to learn and experience resistance training in their own gym with their various amounts of equipment. They also gave us an insight to the future possible career options available that we never aware of. Knowing that Deakin has been the leading university in the sports field for 2 years in a row it ensures us we got the best learning experience to share with both our family and friends and if desired for ourselves if we wish to peruse a career in this field.

Exercise Research Australia Excursion

On the 21st of June students in Unit 3 and 4 VCE PE had the opportunity to use the fitness training laboratories at Exercise Research Australia, Thornbury.

On the day students had a lecture and workshop on two areas of study as well as hands on practical experience.

The areas of study covered were:

On the area of fatigue in sports, student used scientific equipment to analyse their Lactate Inflection Point during exercise and their Level of Hydration.

Students then ran through a number of fitness tests that were designed for the AFL draft (20 m run using timing gates and cameras), Agility test, Yo Yo test, vertical jump, flexibility and sit up test. Each test was conducted to look at the different Fitness components.

Overall students had an amazing opportunity to see how hands on exercise science can be and how it can be used in the real world.

From the PE team, thank you.
